Marking of Lifting Accessories – Identification Without Compromising Safety

Eye bolts and shackles are frequently put into service without a unique identifier, even though they are primary load‑bearing lifting accessories. During use, these components may become damaged, therefore marking of lifting accessories and ensuring of identification is a fundamental safety requirement.

Identification is necessary; however, manufacturers typically do not support post‑manufacturing marking, which creates a compliance risk.
Practical options:
Simple markings (seals, labels, paint): not hazardous, but not durable
Mechanical markings:
stamping → to be avoided
dot peen marking / laser engraving → acceptable under proper control
Conditions for safe laser engraving include:
on the outer radius
outside critical zones
with shallow, surface‑level depth
using documented parameters
Some manufacturers already offer integrated RFID solutions. While their use is increasing, in practice mixed equipment fleets will remain common for a long time.
Objective: to ensure traceability without compromising safety.
In the long term, factory‑integrated RFID represents the best solution for lifting accessory marking and maintaining traceability. As an interim approach, laser engraving can be an effective option.
At GÉPTESZT Kft., we support our clients throughout this process – from implementation to, if necessary, verifying through tensile testing of selected samples that the marking does not affect the conformity of the equipment.
